This is what the little girls did during much of our vacation. Right here Talia was making a sand castle home for a worm that she'd found. Capri could play till she was almost delirious with sand, water, and rocks.

This is Landen in the boat that he loved to death. he spent almost no time in the cabin, preferring to be out rowing on the lake. Landen loves the outdoors and being active so very much. It is so much a part of his personality. When I took this picture soon before we left I felt a little twinge of sadness to take him away from a place that made him so happy. He had a little pocketknife that he kept with him at all times and found opportunities to use. He should have lived in the time of Tom Sawyer.

We hiked up to Hidden Falls in Grand Teton National Forest. It wasn't too long and it was fun to have two destinations-the falls and then Inspiration Point which looked out over the National Park.

We rented canoes in the Teton's in Colter Bay. It took us a while to figure out how to canoe together, but the view was breathless. Breck and I were together most of the time, and I made the mistake of sitting up in the front. I would often feel like I was getting nowhere and look back to see Breck backpeddling or dragging one of her feet in the water! Breck and Lan had a race and it was very fun to see them work so hard. They were basically neck and neck.

Breck wanted to jump in so bad. She always loves to get wet. The water was quite cold so this is all the farther she got. Landen wanted nothing to do with getting wet. There were other canoes and boats but the were many times when it felt like it was just us and the lake. I found it very peaceful.

This is my favorite view. It is one angle of the Grand Teton Mountain. I can't quite tell if the other two are part of the cathedral (the three biggest mountains in the region that are bunched somewhat closely together or not. The kids favorite part of canoeing was to turn the canoe into the wake of a passing boat and catch the very small waves.

THough we felt our vacation was nearly perfect, our fishing experience was not very great. The fish Landen was holding was our only catch. It was caught early on and since we saw some very large fish that other people had caught, we threw it back-something we sorely regretted. THe second day that we fised on the snake river we had absolutely no luck. The little girls had a ball playing on the rocks and building sand castles, Landen fished on and off and enjoyed throwing rocks and climbing around, and even made his own fishing pole. Breck was very insistent on catching a fish and patiently spent hours trying. As we prepared to leave she moped over to me and said, "well I had fun casting" which is what she wanted to call her experience since no fish had been remotely involved. Both of them got better at working their poles, casting, baiting, and even putting on weights. It was so beautiful that I didn't really care about not having any fish to deal wtih afterwords.

This is from Inspiration point. It looks out over Jenny Lake. We took a ferry from the other side over and then hiked up to this point. It was amazing. The kids were good hikers.

The highlight of our hiking experience was meeting the many very tame chipmunks. We told the kids not to feed them but they certainly could have fed them by hand. Breck took this picture. They could hold out sticks and have the chipmunks grab the stick. You had to be careful not to step on them. THe kids could have stayed all day just playing with them. We also saw a couple of elk this day. Since it didn't have horns I don't think the kids thought it was much different than the deer we have at our house so regularly.

This is Breck on the ferry ride across the lake. The kids loved to feel the waves and the splash of the water up on the boat. Landen positioned himself right up behind the driver so he could get the best view.

This is a picture from the night we went to the Bar J chuckwagon dinner. It was a very fun experience. Before the dinner you could walk around looking at all the old west paraphanelia. I thought it was pretty funny because people were just eating it up. They had things like an old cowboy cooking biscuits in his dutch oven. Stuff that I've seen from my own cowboy grandpa-but not everybody had seen before. The dinner was good and fun to eat on the tin dinnerware. But the best part was the cowboy entertainment afterwards. It is a family run business with a couple of brothers and a few other "hands" that played guitar, fiddle, bass, etc...They were incredible and kept us enthralled with their skill, humor, and songs for a couple of hours. Another cowboy thing we did was to observe the daily shootout in Jackson Hole. They used blanks in their guns, so it was a pretty loud show. It was fun to have a few kids young enough to wonder of all the music and drama that resulted in a shootout was maybe a little for real. Landen was thrilled to have been tossed a shell from one of the "big guns" after they were done.

This is a perfect picture of how Breck likes to recreat. All the kids enjoyed our mini lake and streams that were right outside our cabin. Breck loves to observe things and to think. She woke up early one morning and ran out to the lake to see what it was like early in the morning. This lake was very very shallow and tiny, but it was the perfect spot for our kids. They had all kinds of make believe adventures in it. There was even a little island and a bridge to make things more exciting. I liked to row with Capri and to have the children take me on personal cruises. It was so wonderful to have some space for the kids to play when we were at the cabin and not out doing something. We felt very blessed to have had the privacy and space. We also had a moose come right outside the door. It was dark and the moose was just eating away. Landen probably got within 10 ft. of it.

It sounds like you had such a fun and relaxing time.
You know, I hate fishing myself. I think I'm the only one in my family. I would always just bring a book. I think it's a lack of patience problem for me.
Wow, that sounds like a fantastic vacation. By the way, I believe Moose are extremely agressive.
