my thing............ any tips?

so, i have taken up a new sport. one that I am going to firmly stick with. to pursue and love and smile through the sweat . it is .............basket ball! I ,Brecklyn winder have decided to play basket ball , Now my friends, this is not a sport for the faint of heart. it takes courage of the bravest , guess why that is? because it's not a popular sport for the short kids especially girls at school . i will re- play the glory of my first game.

Megan my friend looks over at the court where lots of boys are playing basketball she nods her head towards them and says "do you play b-ball?"i nervously nod and say "yeah, a couple years ago, why"? "she shrugs "we've been playing soccer for a while now,and I'm really good at basketball, i could teach you how to play!" i agree and we run over. okay , i lied she ran over and i minced behind trying to look like i play all the time. with two new players they rearrange the teems.
Megan is chosen first and not just any "i choose Megan for my teem " it was "over here M-dude!
you still got the three point swish up your sleeve?! my thoughts ...."what? m-dude! what is this? three point swish?" oh man. they proceeded to divide up the teems until they got to me.
they squinted at me. "who're you? " i mumbled my name and they finally gave me to the team with Megan. only because she threatened to go back to soccer if they didn't.
i sigh and get squint into the sun waiting for the game to begin. the first part was okay. i just hung around the hoop on our side until Megan shouted at me to get aggressive. i took it to heart. couple seconds later i was dodging , ducking and very aggresivly avoiding the ball while in the middle of the court .that my friends takes serious skill. but it wasn't really enjoyable. so i started to call for the ball"hey over here!" "right behind you!" they ignored me completely.

i was pretty frustrated. i saw some one coming towards me ...... with the ball. i ran over and blocked his shot he fumbled and almost dropped it and so i grabbed the ball and so did he .thoughts.......
oh man. this is a disaster, all i wanted was a little action! to be able to do somthing and for my teemates to think "wow, she's not that bad! she just needs some time." my happy thoughts were interrupted by a wrenching pain in my arm. the boy had whipped the ball away with every ounce of strength he owned and was now yelling at me. "what the heck? i am on your teem dude!"
i mumbled humble apoligies and hung my head. i forced myself not to cry and kept playing . may i add this was all in the first five minutes of recess . twenty long more minutes to go. i was a little more acknowledged after that incident .

i ran with everybody else and kept calling for the ball. A boy (on my teem) dribbles down the court till he was directly parelell with me his eyes were on the hoop and he was a little behind the foul shot line. i totally assumed he was going to make a shot so i zoned out for a second or two, and what do you know! while keeping his eyes on the back board he bounce passes the ball to me off the side ! i totally missed it and was really humiliated as the ball rolled right past me. meagan grabs it and motions everyone over she whispers something to everyone and they all run back on to the court. they pass the ball to me and watch as i, ungarded , dribble down the court and shoot ..... and scorethey all gather around patting me on the back and telling me how good i did. it was really nice of them to do that and to let me score like that but i felt like a total idiot struggling to dribble straight and running ahead of the ball and having to go back and get it. plus being ungarded ! then ........ the bell rings and i drag myself inside. miraculously i went out and did it again next recess and the next . now i really enjoy it except for the fact that i am still not very good . if you have any tips , send them my way.
thanks for reading!

What a wonderful story!

As a fellow "amazing basketball player in hiding", I have found that the secret to sports is lots and lots of practice. In other words, I've never played much basketball, (it shows), but the sports I have played, I got good at them, and the biggest difference was the amount of time I spent on them.

For basketball, you can get a ball and hoop and practice on your own, or with Landen. I think you can keep going to the court during recess, and commit to learning as much as you can from your friends. Be really open to advice, be a good teammate, and they will be more forgiving than you might think. I think that, with basketball, the shooting is the hardest part, so you might want to work on that on your own time. However, passing the ball can only be practiced with a team, so at recess, I would focus on that.

Note of advice: just because you have the ball doesn't mean you have to take the shot (a mistake I've made many a time). Focus first on what you are best at, and use that to help the team.

Thanks for the story, it brought back a ton of memories! Good luck, Breck-dude!
